天氣回暖，空氣的濕度亦顯著上升，除了家居環境會有霉菌外，耳道也可能被真菌入侵而「發霉」。患者會經常覺得耳朵很癢及有塞住的感覺，以為有東西或耳垢入耳，但其實是真菌耳道內繁殖增生。抵抗力較弱、長期使用抗生素等人士較容易被真菌侵襲，而真菌亦可經由不潔的挖耳工具及棉花棒進入耳道，而殘留的棉花加耳垢就更加是真菌的理想溫床。
耳道發霉的徵狀，與細菌感染不相似。由細菌引起的感染通常會令耳道紅腫及有痛楚，而真菌感染則只會令患者有耳痕、聽力下降、有耳塞感及有黏液流出。由於徵狀不算嚴重，因此容易被忽視及延誤治理。
抗生素對於真菌感染沒有功效，而單用抗真菌耳液或耳膏未必可以殺清生命力十分頑強的真菌孢子，這時便需要醫生利用顯微鏡及工具，清理耳道內的真菌孢子，有時要重複多次治療才能徹底清走所有真菌。市面有很多的耳道清潔液、鹽水或耳油等去耳垢產品，但這些產品可能會增加耳道的水分，反而會增加真菌孳生的風險。其實耳垢會自然排走，除非特殊情況，否則毋須使用外物或清潔劑處理。

耳 仔 生 菇
夏 日 將 至 ， 水 上 活 動 是 最 佳 的 消 暑 方 法 ， 但 若 耳 仔 入 水 後 處 理 不 當 ， 可引 致 耳 道 發 霉。 通 常 游 泳 後 15 至 30 分 鐘 ， 外 耳 道 的 積 水 就 會 自 然 乾 透 ， 若 聽 覺 出 現 的 「 耳 塞 」 情 況 持 續 兩 、 三 天 ， 可 能 是 大 量 耳 垢 遇 水 後 發 脹 ， 阻 塞 耳 道 ，並 引 致 炎 症 ， 甚 至 有 真 菌 (fungus) 在 耳 道 內 生 長 ， 出 現 「 耳 仔 生 菇 」 的 發 霉 現 象 。
人體 的 外 耳 道 (external auditory canal) 只 有 長 約 2.5 厘 米 ， 加 上 有 耳 膜 (ear drum) 阻 隔 ， 有 水 入 耳 後 一 般 很 快 可 排 出 ， 或 在 耳 道 內 自 然 乾 透 ， 但 有 部 份 人 天 生 較 易 積 聚 耳 垢 (cerumen impaction) ， 令 積 水 較 難 排 出 。 若 耳 垢 吸 收 了 水 份 發 脹 ，嚴 重 時 可 將 整 個 外 耳 道 封 閉 ， 令 患 者 聽 力 下 降 ， 甚 至 可 引 致 霉 菌 滋 生 (fungal otitis externa)， 出 現 「 耳 仔生 菇 」 的 情 況 ， 共 延 誤 治 療 外 耳 道 發 炎 ， 炎 症 可 蔓 延 至 內 耳 (inner ear)， 損 害 內 耳 神 經 (auditory nerve)， 導 致 聽 覺 永 久 受 損 。
耳 朵 皮 膚 對 泳 池 水 過 敏 也 會 引 發 不 適， 患 者 可 能 對 用 作 消 毒 泳 池 的 氯 氣 或 臭 氧 敏 感 ， 耳 仔 入 水 一 般 半 小 時 內 會 乾 透 ， 若 仍 有 積 水 可 將 頭 側 向 入 水 那 一 邊， 通 常 數 秒 鐘 後 水 會 自 然 流 出 ， 也 可 用 風 筒 的 冷 風 輔 助 吹 乾 ， 但 切 忌 將 棉 花 棒 或 金 屬 物 放 入 耳 道 內 清 理 積 水 。
External ear infection, sometimes referred to as swimmer's ear, is most commonly caused by bacterial sources. It is associated with ear pain, drainage, and hearing loss if the ear canal is swollen or plugged with debris. Fungal external ear infection, or fungal otitis externa is diagnosed by ear microscopic exam when fungal debris is identified in the ear canal. Fungus likes to grow in moist environment and therefore patients with fungal otitis are advised to keep their ear dry by using ear plugs or cotton balls during baths. Patients often complain of itchy ears and require several trips to Ear specialist for ear cleaning. Special acidic ear drops are prescribed after ear cleaning to prevent persistent infection or recurrence.
